LWV History

The North Carolina League was founded in 1920 and for more than 100 years the League of Women Voters has empowered people to take control of their democracy. The Dare County League was founded in 1987 by Diane Henderson and 36 Dare County residents. Their first project was a community workshop held at the Baum Center.

What will the next 100 years hold? Initially formed to help 20 million newly enfranchised women vote, the League of Women Voters has evolved into a nonpartisan organization that molds political leaders, shapes public policy, and promotes informed citizen participation.
